We get to watch the migration of California Gray Pelicans as they back and forth between Baja California and Alaska each year.
In 2020, due to the smoke from wildfires in Oregon, we had the treat of dozens of pelicans spending a few days on a small rock island in front of our house.

Cormorants watch in reverent silence as the majestic pelicans migrate north, Yachats, Oregon, USA, 2012.
This is how we usually see the migrating pelicans... flying bye in long lines of usually 16 to 20.
We have seen as few as 1 and as many as 50 or 60 traveling together, but they seldom stop.

Colorful pelican takes a rest on his migration north, Yachats, Oregon, 2012.

In September of 2020, several large wildfires swept through many parts of Oregon.
Luckily, the closest one to us was 40 miles north in Lincoln City and Otis.
However, winds fanned the smoke all over the state and, at times, it was especially bad along the coast where the warm ash met the cool air off the Pacific.
One of the consequences was that several dozen Pelicans were grounded and chose to spend their time on a small rock island just off the coast in front of our house.
